Nicolas, also known as Nic or Nico, was raised in a group of mercenaries as a child soldier. The captain, Gaston Brown, was Nic's father. He bought a stray Twilight woman and got her pregnant. After Nicolas was born, Gaston killed her. Nic's father intended to sell Nicolas when he was a little older and worth more money, provided Nic lived long enough to get there. In the meanwhile, he and the merc troop used Nic's inhuman strength to aid their battles.
Since it was illegal for a mercenary band to keep a Twilight in their factions, and because he was not in the government system, Nic's status as a Twilight was kept secret. The mercs treated him inhumanely, often beating him and leaving visible bruises, referring to him as "thing," and considering him to be incapable of intelligent communication, despite only being deaf. He was not allowed to sit on furniture and, when injured, was given no first aid except what he could do for himself.
Eventually, the mercenaries were hired to guard a mansion where Nic became introduced to the bastard son of the boss, Wallace Arcangelo. When not on battle missions with the troops, Nic was left to guard the boy. Wallace ended up instructing Nicolas in reading, writing, and sign language, proving that Nic is very smart and learns fast. He defeated Wallace, an incredibly bright teenager, at card games, and his speech improved during this time, as well. Before Wallace's help, it can be assumed that Nic taught himself how to read lips and speak through a lot of guesswork.
Due to Nic's cycles shortening between his doses of Celebrer, Gaston believed his son to be on his way to the grave and sold Nicolas' contract to Wallace. His father left him behind with the parting words that he was useless and a monster, mentally crushing Nic. A new mercenary band arrived to work at the mansion and gave him the same maltreatment. The two boys were stuck in an unhealthy cycle of repeating abuse. One night, when Wallace's father was beating on his son particularly savagely, Nicolas snapped and slaughtered everyone in the mansion except for Wallace. Afterwards, he attempted to kill himself with a blade but was stopped by Wallace. The two young boys fled to Ergastulum to start new lives, Wallace age 13 and Nicolas age 12.
Ergastulum is a city which was established to quarantine Twilights. Any strays outside of the city are caught by the government and placed in Ergastulum. About a decade after the city was founded, criminal overflow from prisons was also dumped into Ergastulum, with refugees and other poor persons later migrating to the city. There is now a diverse, seedy population and high crime rate.
The two boys scraped by with a rough life for 22 years, eventually forming an odd jobs business known as Benriya (The Handymen) and building a reputation as troublemakers and reliable hires. Nic is generally hired to kill criminals, to serve as a bodyguard, or to complete the occasional odd job such as deliveries or construction work.
